SECURITY MANAGEMENT (FDA)

Post by Ted-Pencry on 25/3/2013, 18:24

Overview

Our Lancaster University validated Foundation Degree in Security Management is brand new for 2012. Working with the Security Institute the programme has been developed to enable questions such as how to protect organisations, people, assets, information and reputation from risks such as crime, fraud and accidents to be answered. These issues have become more prevalent in recent years as crimes such as identity theft and fraud have become much more common. Security Management has become an increasingly important issue in organisations – many companies now employ specialists in security right up to board level. Our Foundation Degree validated by Lancaster University responds to this specific need. It is designed for those already working in Security Management roles seeking to increase their professionalism or those wishing to enter the profession. Applicants who do not have an academic history but have relevant work / life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview. As the industry has become much more regulated there is a need for highly trained Security Managers working across various disciplines and settings, both in the UK and overseas.

The security profession is in a period of rapid growth and diversification with the role of corporate security manager becoming increasingly central to organisations in both the public and private sectors. As such we expect the demand for suitably qualified professionals in Security Management to be high over the coming years. The FdA Security Management is one of very few Security qualifications available in the UK.

The successful completion of the course means that students will also acquire The Security Institute Diploma in Security Management. The Diploma is an internationally recognised qualification that provides full membership of the Security Institute and entitles its holders to use the letters MSyl after their names.

What Will I Study?

The content of the programme includes the management of operational and strategic approaches, risk management, criminal justice, public order and the impacts on the public whilst firmly maintaining a commercial standpoint and working closely with industry. The learning will be delivered through online distance learning and up to six three day workshops each year.

The modules focus on the identification of assets, threats and vulnerabilities and the risk assessment of these through Security Management techniques. The module content encompasses key areas such as criminological ideas as well as risk management, management, security theory and practices. Three themes to the programme can be identified – Business skills, Legal and Criminological aspects, and the transfer of theory to practice.

You will also study core modules in Work-Based Learning and Personal Development Planning – these modules are inherent in all Foundation Degrees. As part of the course you will need to undertake a work based placement of at least 120 hours, in a relevant setting, each academic year. For some entrants to the course this could be your existing employment, if it is in a relevant field.
